Book your IELTS test

IMPORTANT NOTICE: No electronic devices will be allowed into the test room.These electronic devices also include hearing aids, blood glucose monitors, as well as phones, headphones, etc. You may leave them with your personal belongings. There will be a cloaking room for your belongings, but please leave your valuables at home. If you want to take the exam with your medical devices, you must contact our test centre at least 2 days in advance.

Before you book or travel to a British Council IELTS testing point, you’ll need to have the following items ready:

  1. A valid identification document (identity card or passport). Your ID must be valid at the time of booking and on the test day. If you're under 18, your parents will need to register online on your behalf. IELTS is not recommended for anyone under 16.

    Important Note: You will not be allowed to take the IELTS test with a driver's license, Blue Card, Residence Permit, Work Permit and Lawyer Identification Card. In addition, you will not be allowed to take the test with an ID or passport that does not have a photo on it, is worn, broken, has a broken chip or is out of date.

  2. A credit/debit card to pay through our online booking system.
    Alternatively, you can pay by bank transfer up to 5 days before your test day. In the bank transfer statement, you must write your full name, test date and the reference number that will be given to you during registration.

The British Council cannot accept payments made from banks (or other financial institutions) sanctioned by the UK or any other relevant jurisdiction. Where the British Council discovers evidence of payment from a sanctioned bank and/or sanctioned financial institution we will freeze all funds related to that payment and will be unable to deliver the service for which the payment was intended. Please therefore ensure that you do not make payments from an account in a sanctioned bank and/or sanctioned financial institution.

At a test centre:

  • IELTS on computer
  • IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper (not available for UKVI tests)

Remotely:

  • IELTS Online

You can take advantage of more frequent session dates and times with IELTS on computer or IELTS on computer with Writing on Paper at our official test centres.

  • If you are taking IELTS in a British Council testing point, you can choose your Speaking test slot.
  • If you take IELTS Online, your Speaking test will usually be scheduled before your Listening, Reading and Writing. It could be on the same or a different day.

Your Listening, Reading and Writing sections of the test will be completed on the same day with no break in between.

  • the start time of your test 
  • where you will take your test (including testing point address)
  • your Speaking test date and time
  • your access to IELTS Ready Premium
