Hamlet (Laurence Olivier, 1948)

161 mins / b&w Featuring: Laurence Olivier, Basil Sydney, Jean Simmons

Laurence Olivier delivers one of his greatest Shakespearean performances as the lead role in this noir-ish Academy Award-winning 1948 version of Hamlet. Seldom has the tragic story of the Danish Prince, tortured by his duty to his murdered father and by the guilt and fear he feels at the prospect of revenge, been so brilliantly portrayed in this immortal story of murder, intrigue, madness and despair.

Hamlet (Sonia Friedman Productions at the Barbican Theatre)

Directed by Lindsey Turner

Running time: 3hrs 23mins (including interval)

With Benedict Cumberbatch

Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC TV’s Sherlock, The Imitation Game, Frankenstein at the National Theatre) takes on the title role of Shakespeare’s great tragedy. Directed by Lyndsey Turner (Posh, Chimerica) and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions. As a country arms itself for war, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father’s death but paralysed by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state.
