Women and leadership in arts and culture

The British Council believes that gender equality and women’s empowerment are crucial to creating inclusive, open and prosperous societies.

In support of this, we have initiated a three year programme - Women and leadership in arts and culture - the purpose of which is to support the upward mobility of women leaders in the cultural sector and to promote their potential as makers of social change.

The Women and leadership in arts and culture programme started with a period of research examining the profile, current roles and influence of women in the creative sectors in Turkey. The research findings will be accessible online this year.

At the second stage of the programme, four mid-career female culture professionals will undertake a programme of mentoring, placements and ideas exchange with UK counterparts and organisations during 2018.  Efruz Çakırkaya, Istanbul Music Festival Assistant Director, İKSV; Ezgi Yalınalp, Puruli Culture and Arts, Co-founding Director; Esra Gönen, ORİGİNN Co-founding Director and Simay Dinç, Recontact Digital Arts, Game and Technology Co. A.Ş Co-founding Director will be the leaders in the programme.

In 20/20 we aim to present a major cultural event, the WOW –Women of the World Festival, in Istanbul. Our four women leaders will take lead curatorial roles on the programme. They will be supported by a new tranche of younger women leaders whom they will mentor.

The launch of the programme took place on 12 April with the participation of Jude Kelly, CBE, the artistic director of Southbank Centre and the founder of WOW – Women of the World festival.  .
