The Science Communication Networking Event hosted recently in Istanbul was a captivating blend of networking, panels and discussions among young science communicators and top scientists, backed up by visual performances to bring out the hidden scientists in all of us.

THE INTERNATIONAL DECLARATION FROM SCIENCE COMMUNICATORS
When over 120 young Science Communicators from ten countries came together in Istanbul to form a stronger network, they signed their names under the International Declaration, pledging their dedication to the Beautiful Science approach.

REFLECTIONS ON A WEEK OF SCIENCE IN ISTANBUL
After two days of work and play at the Science Communication Networking Event in Istanbul, we were left with an International Declaration, a future in networking, and many, many fond memories. Below we present a range of comments and reflections from those who took part in the activities.
BOSPHORUS CONFERENCE DEBATES TURKEY-EU RELATIONS IN ITS FIFTH YEAR
Celebrating its fifth year, the British Council’s annual Bosphorus Conference once again brought together high-level politicians, academicians, independent thinkers and journalists from Turkey and Europe in Istanbul on 10–11 October for discussions on Turkey’s EU accession. This year’s Bosphorus Conference, which is following closely Turkey’s EU negotiation process, became also a platform for discussion on the affect of the global economic crisis and the rise in tension in the Caucasus on Turkey’s EU aspirations.

YOUNG PEOPLE BUILD THE ROAD TOWARDS THE BOSPHORUS CONFERENCE
Sinem Kocamaz, a research assistant from Ege University, stepped up to voice the perspective of young people during the recent Bosphorus Conference on Turkey-EU relations. Sinem’s selection as the voice of young people during the conference was the result of a six-month process earlier this year in which the views of young people from three Turkish cities, Izmir, Kayseri and Antalya, were heard in three workshops.
JOURNALIST OBSERVES TRANSITION TO OPTIMISM IN TURKEY-EU RELATIONS
Fulya Özerkan, diplomatic correspondent from English-language newspaper Hürriyet Daily News joined a group of university students in Antalya as they discussed Turkey’s bid for EU accession. The meeting took place prior to the British Council’s high-level Bosphorus Conference, being held for the fifth time this year.
