TURKEY’S EU ACCESSION: YOUR OPINIONS
Last month, we asked you to share with us your opinions on the benefits Turkey’s European Union accession will bring to both parties, as a lead-in to our annual Bosphorus Conference, entitled ‘Turkey and the EU: Building Ties of Mutual Benefit,’ which will take place in Istanbul on 10–11 October.

A COMPLEX AND DYNAMIC ISSUE
M. Atilla Öner and Özgür Zan, academicians from Yeditepe University, argue that the European Union accession is a complex, dynamic issue, containing multiple non-linear processes. The System Dynamic model they have developed predicts the most likely date for Turkey’s EU accession as January 2018.
TOWARDS A DIVERSE AND FLUID EUROPE
Nicholas Hobbs, a resident of Istanbul for five years, discusses why it is important to make the EU work better in the interests of a diverse and fluid `Europe,’ where should the borders of Europe stop, and how the reactionary and self-destructive currents in Turkey qualify for the concepts encapsulated in the ‘European.’

FOREIGN INVESTMENT DEMANDS CHANGE
Richard McNamara, a British resident of Didim, Aydin, and an entrepreneur with his own business, shares a more personal opinion of Turkey’s EU accession. Richard argues that it is not fair to condemn a country that is still growing in terms of its industry and population and that is trying to learn from other countries. He also says that the investments of foreign nationals are the cause of a demand in change in Turkey.
IS THE FUTURE BLEAK OR BRIGHT?
Özgür Erkan, a graduate of the London School of Economics and Political Science, asks if the future of negotiations for Turkey’s European Union membership is bleak or bright. Özgür’s opinion falls more towards the bleak side, not because of the opposition of some EU member states to Turkey’s membership, but because Turkey has not carried out the necessary reforms to open certain chapters in the negotiation process.

EUROPE NEEDS TURKEY
One of our readers asserts that Turkey is already European, and that Europe needs Turkey more than Turkey needs the accession. He believes that Turkey’s young workforce, its pivotal position on the energy routes and its strong economy make it the ideal candidate for membership.
TURKEY SHOULD THINK TWICE
Seda Hava Çorapçi believes that now is not a good time for Turkey to become a part of the European Union, believing that adjustment will be a burdensome process for both sides, and that as an emotional nation, Turkey should be very careful to retain its cultural heritage and values.

CONFLICTING ATTITUDES FROM EU MEMBERS
Ibrahim Efe, a Turkish student at Lancaster University, draws attention to Turkey’s orientation towards Westernisation since its foundation in 1923, the conflicting attitudes towards Turkey’s European Union accession among some of the member countries, and the stereotypical and prejudiced opinions of Turkey among many European parliamentarians.
