EU-TURKEY RELATIONS; DRIFTING APART?

‘Do Turkey and the EU have a joint vision for Europe?’
‘The EU, Turkey and the Middle East,’
‘Economic integration and energy’

These will be the three major areas focused on in this year’s high-level, invitation-only Bosphorus Conference, which is entitled ‘The EU and Turkey: Drifting Apart?,’ and taking place in Istanbul on 5-6 October.

The key note speakers will be Ali Babacan, Turkey’s Minister of Foreign Affairs; Olli Rehn, European Union Commissioner for Enlargement; Carl Bildt, Sweden’s Minister of Foreign Affairs; Mehmet Simsek, Turkey’s Minister of State for Economy; Hilmi Güler, Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources; and Neil Kinnock, Chair of the British Council and former EU Vice President, .


WIN A CHANCE TO LEARN ENGLISH IN THE UK
Here is your chance to enter a competition offering the chance of a lifetime to study English in the UK. The competition, launched by the British Council and English UK, is part of the ‘Let your English grow’ campaign run as part of the Prime Minister’s Initiative for International Education. It is open to people of all ages living in Turkey. To enter, all students have to do is visit www.letyourenglishgrow.org, complete the short fun test, which explores the applicant’s English language skills and sets them a creative writing challenge.

TRAINING STAGE OF EUROSKILLS PROJECT LAUNCHED
The training stage of our Euroskills project was launched with an official reception in the residence of the British Ambassador on 11 September, with the participation of the General Secretary of the Secretariat General for EU Affairs (EUSG) Ambassador Oguz Demiralp and Deputy Director of the UK Cabinet Office’s European Policy Directorate Neil McMillan.

USA SAYS YES TO IELTS
The demand for International English Language Testing System (IELTS) continues to increase as hundreds of US institutions recognize the test. Such organizations include four-year undergraduate institutions, graduate and professional institutions, two-year and community colleges, as well as specialized, certificate, and diploma programmes
A WORKSHOP ON WRITING REFERENCES AND APPLICATIONS
British Council will collaborate with UCAS, the central organisation that processes applications for full-time undergraduate courses at UK universities and colleges, for a workshop in Istanbul on 26 September.

ISTANBUL BIENNIAL WELCOMES BRITISH ARTISTS
As the 10th International Istanbul Biennial is approaching, four British artists are preparing to showcase their work in September. Over 150 projects by more than 100 artists and artist groups from 35 different countries will be launched across the city during the Biennial, running between 8 September and 4 November. The British artists whose work will be featured in the Biennial are Tomoko Yoneda, Jonathan Barnbrook, Justin Bennett and Ian Kiaer.
FROZEN WAVES TO BRIGHTEN ISTANBUL NIGHTS
British Council will be part of this year’s Biennial with Frozen Waves, a continuous programme of media work on screen in one of Istanbul’s busiest squares overlooking the Golden Horn from 6 September. New works by artists Babak Ghazi, Mustafa Hulusi, Mark Titchner and Eva Weinmayr from the UK and Paul Snowden from Germany will be broadcasted via publicly-sited screens in Istanbul and the UK.
