ISTANBUL BIENNIAL WELCOMES BRITISH ARTISTS
As the 10th International Istanbul Biennial is approaching, four British artists are preparing to showcase their work in September. Over 150 projects by more than 100 artists and artist groups from 35 different countries will be launched across the city during the Biennial, running between 8 September and 4 November. The British artists whose work will be featured in the Biennial are Tomoko Yoneda, Jonathan Barnbrook, Justin Bennett and Ian Kiaer.

FROZEN WAVES TO BRIGHTEN ISTANBUL NIGHTS
British Council will be part of this year’s Biennial with Frozen Waves, a continuous programme of media work on screen in one of Istanbul’s busiest squares overlooking the Golden Horn from 6 September. New works by artists Babak Ghazi, Mustafa Hulusi, Mark Titchner and Eva Weinmayr from the UK and Paul Snowden from Germany will be broadcasted via publicly-sited screens in Istanbul and the UK.
 



TRAINING DELIVERY BEGINS FOR EUROSKILLS
As our Euroskills project enters its final stage, local trainers from the Prime Minister’s Secretariat General for EU Affairs (EUSG) will begin delivering training on Generic Communication Skills, EU Accession Related Negotiations and Drafting Skills, Strategic Communications Skills, Training of Trainers for Local Trainers, and Advanced English Language Training in October to civil servants working closely on Turkey’s EU accession process.
TEACHER TRAINING COURSES, THIS AUTUMN
Our wide range of teacher development courses will continue after September. Although the courses are run in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, an online version for those outside these cities will also be available on our web pages. Check our list of the teaching courses available to English teachers this autumn.

PEACEKEEPING IN TURKEY WITH ENGLISH
Alan Rutt recently arrived in Ankara to set up a new Peacekeeping English Project in Turkey. The project is funded by the UK’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO), and aims to help Turkish law enforcement agencies develop their English language training systems and capacity. Alan summarises his impressions of Turkey’s history, and its current political and military status.
MAHALLI SEMINARS IN EIGHT CITIES
Mahalli seminars continue as British Council’s English Language Teaching (ELT) team travel to eight cities, delivering seminars as part of the Ministry of Education’s In-service Education programme for English teachers at primary and secondary schools.

SOKAK LIGI TOURNAMENT BRINGS CHILDREN TOGETHER
As the Social Responsibility Association takes over the overall responsibility of the Sokak Ligi programme, Greater Izmir City Municipality hosted 15 teams from 15 cities for the national tournament. While children played against one another, the coaches and local coordinators received training on anger management, adolescent behaviour, communication with children, mentoring and leadership, as well as examining UK case studies shared by British and Turkish experts.
VISUALISE, WHERE ART MEETS SCIENCE
Here is your chance to watch Visualise – the Beauty of Science on 8 November, as Ankara’s Middle East Technical University will host this one-hour inspirational show where art meets science. This unique visual spectacle is part of British Council’s Beautiful Science project, providing a creative platform for science communication among young people.
