LOVE CONQUERS ALL AT THE INTERNATIONAL FAMELAB COMPETITION.
‘Love conquers all’, Virgil said in the first century BC, and it certainly did it for Marko Kosicek from Croatia whose presentation ‘The Biochemistry of Love!’ swept all competition on his way to the first international FameLab winner’s prize at the competition which took place during the Cheltenham Science Festival.

WHEN THE QUEEN MET THE KING
‘When the Queen met the King’ was the catchy headline chosen by some Turkish newspapers to describe the meeting of Queen Elizabeth II and Hakan Sükür, probably Turkey’s most famous football player. Sükür, or the King to many of his fans, was training a number of Turkish children from disadvantaged backgrounds when he was introduced to the Queen during her recent visit to Turkey.
AN ENGLISH STUDY CENTRE IN THE POLICE ACADEMY
A large multimedia English Study Centre that opened recently in the Faculty of Security Sciences of the Police Academy in Ankara was the latest fruit of the collaboration between the Turkish Police Academy and the British Council. Our Peacekeeping English Project, or PEP Turkey, continues to support English learning in the Police Academy.

Lending an ear to young people on the EU vision
The fluctuating character of Turkish-EU relations and Ankara’s performance has paradoxically weakened since the formal launch of accession negotiations in 2005 amid political turmoil in the country. Young people in Turkey argue that the EU project is a test of sincerity for both sides. Fulya Özerkan, from Turkish Daily News, attended the first workshop and followed the day-long discussions on EU – Turkey relations with the participating university students. THE 3rd INTERNATIONAL ANTI-HOMOPHOBIA MEETING
UK Labour politician Michael Cashman, a Member of the European Parliament and a former actor, was in Ankara recently as a guest of the British Council to deliver a speech at the 3rd International Anti-Homophobia Meeting, organised by the Ankara-based NGO, Kaos GL.

UK TEACHERS VISIT TURKISH HIGH SCHOOLS
British teachers were recently hosted at high schools in Ankara as part of the Teachers` International Professional Development (TIPD) programme, run by the UK’s Department for Children, Schools and Families. Following their visit, the four visiting teachers gave their impressions of the Turkish education system and its high schools.
UK NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER VISITS IZMIR
Last year’s winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Prof Anil Markandya, visited Izmir recently as the keynote speaker at the 3rd International Economics Conference. Prof Markandya spoke to the British Council about climate change and global warming, and gave us his view of Turkey’s position on these key issues.

FOOTBALL FOR DEVELOPMENT IN THE BALKANS
A number of children from Turkey were recently given a once in a lifetime experience, travelling to Foča in Bosnia and Herzegovina to join a unique event as part of Development through Football initiative. The young football players were part of Sokak Ligi, a project aiming to provide opportunities to disadvantaged children in Turkish society through football.
YOUNG SCIENCE COMMUNICATOR TO REPRESENT TURKEY
The ten finalists in our FameLab competition took to the stage earlier this month to impress both a jury and a non-scientific audience with a five-minute presentation on a scientific topic of their choice. The winner, Dr Deniz Demiryürek, had the honour of repeating his presentation to Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh during their recent visit to Turkey, and will represent Turkey at the upcoming Cheltenham Science Festival.

TOWARDS A YOUTH NETWORK
The British Council’s Youth CAN project continues to provide an international voice to young people. A recent meeting in Ankara to discuss Networking Skills and Intercultural Learning brought together 23 organisations from 17 countries, and aimed at establishing a structured and registered intercultural dialogue network among youth NGOs.
ENGAGE CONTINUES TO FOCUS ON CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
British Council Turkey continues to support ENGAGE, an international programme promoting Corporate Social Responsibility. A recent meeting brought together company, technical and community experts as they continue with the implementation of the pilot project on raising environmental awareness.

UK EXPERTS LECTURE ON CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Ivor Jeremy Hopkins, from the UK consultancy company MHC International Ltd., lectures on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainable Business Practices as part of a Certificate Programme on Sustainable Development.
