Tourism teachers writing their own course books
Raymond Kerr of the British Council enjoyed ‘meeting and working with teachers of hotel and tourism vocational high schools a total of 30 hours for two weeks as part of the first stage of a collaboration between the British Council and the Turkish Ministry of National Education to enhance the skills of teachers to be able to write their own course books in the future.

Before and after our courses
Sirin Soyöz, one of the English teachers who took our Teacher Development Course, reflects on what the second part of the course means to her. Soyöz says that certain things about being an English teacher ‘used to seem complicated at the very beginning, but after the Teacher Development Course, I realised that I have gained confidence in my practical skills, and made my lessons more fun and motivating.’
Culture and Identity in Budapest
The Network Effect continues to nurture networks between the next generation of leaders from Europe. The most recent one on Culture and Identity is being held in Budapest, with Çelenk Bafra, Director of the International Istanbul Biennial, and Tolga Korkut, Editor-In-Chief and Human Rights Editor for Internet news site bianet.org, representing the future leaders from Turkey.

Training begins for Turkey-EU negotiations
A recent working meeting on Strategic Communications and EU Accession Negotiations brought together senior civil servants in Abant within the context of the Euroskills project. The participants worked towards re-formulating Turkey’s communication strategy during the accession process.
InterAction in the Black Sea and Central Asia
A recent meeting was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, to look into the possibilities of initiating a programme on Leadership for Entrepreneurship in the Black Sea and Central Asia regions, a high-profile British Council initiative.

Printed newsletter goes online
From now on, with this issue, you can read our printed newsletter online. This month, you will find numerous articles on corporate social responsibility with best practices taken both from the UK and Turkey. Additionally, for the first time ever, two of the articles were published in Turkish. There are also find two articles about the prestigious BAFTA awards.

Towards a national qualification framework

Scottish bagpipes in Izmir
A recent concert brought together the Izmir Symphony Orchestra and piper, Barnaby Brown, from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. The Orchestra performed ‘Orkney Wedding with Sunrise,’ reliving the festivities of the traditional Scottish wedding, where celebrations continue throughout the night until morning.
Professor Geoffrey Lewis, 1920-2008
Professor Geoffrey Lewis, scholar of the Turkish language and culture and an advocate of friendship between Turkey and the UK, dies at the age of 87.
