 SEMINAR DISCUSSES DARWIN AND TEACHING EVOLUTION
|
 The British Council continues to celebrate the bicentenary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of his book ‘On the Origin of Species.’ A recent seminar on ‘Understanding and Teaching Evolution’ at Istanbul’s Bosphorus University brought together science teachers and university communicators to listen to one of the greatest scientists and science communicators in Turkey.

| SYMPOSIUM DISCUSSES ‘OUR SHARED VALUES’
|
 The British Council’s new initiative ‘Our Shared Europe’ kicks off with a symposium, organised in partnership with Bahçesehir University, Civilization Studies Centre (CSC) and the Association for Muslim Social Scientists. The ‘Our Shared Values’ symposium was launched to provide a platform for the discussion of a set of shared values and principles contributing to intercultural dialogue among an alliance of communities, representing different cultures, religions and thoughts.

| A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS IN VOCATIONAL EDUCATION

 Two separate visits to the UK by representatives from businesses, the Ministry of National Education, local government in Istanbul, the Employment Office and the Federation for Catering Industrialists showed once again that partnerships are the key to success. The visits were part of the British Council’s undertaking to promote vocational education as a means of meeting the needs of industry.

| NEXT GENERATION OF WORLD CITIZENS DISCUSS IMMIGRATION

 Kristen Biehl was among the many next generation Europeans and young North Americans who gathered in Lisbon recently to discuss immigration as part of the British Council’s two networking programmes, the Network Effect and the Transatlantic Networks 2020. Biehl gives us her impressions of the event, the lessons she took from the various best practices, and how the global agenda on immigration is reflected in Turkey.

| YOUNG GIRLS SHOWCASE FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP

 The British Council’s Skills@Work programme continues to encourage vocational high school students to showcase their skills for businesses. The winners of our Skills@Work Challenge, an enterprise competition organised by the British Council and the Ministry of National Education General Directorate of Girls’ Technical Education, were announced recently.

 The British Council’s Social Entrepreneurship Project kicked off recently in Istanbul with a one-day conference, introducing the concepts of social entrepreneurship and social enterprise, and facilitating collaborative efforts among the participants, who came from NGOs, the private sector and the government.

| TAKE OUR EXAMS IN THE COMPUTER-BASED FORMAT

 Are you ready to say goodbye to pen and paper when taking our exams? The British Council is now offering the Cambridge ESOL examinations and Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) in the computer-based format. There are now more dates, exams are less time-consuming, they are more fun, and you will be reducing your carbon footprints.

Climate Arena (Iklim Meydani) recently brought together experts, the British Council’s Climate Advocates, and students for an open discussion on climate change. Following brief presentations by the panel of experts, the audience were invited to pose questions to the panel, moderated by Radyo ODTÜ host and stand-up comedian Ege Kayacan.
