The British Council, Centre for European Reform (CER) and Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV) jointly organised the third Bosphorus Conference on EU-Turkey relations. This high-level, invitation-only conference took place in Istanbul on 15-16 September 2006. The Chatham House Rule was applied during the Conference.

Among the participants of the previous two highly acclaimed events were Abdullah Gül, Geoff Hoon MP, Kemal Derviş, Joost Lagendijk MEP, Lord Hannay, Murat Mercan, Pavel Telička, Dominique Moïsi, Ahmet Davutoğlu, Andrew Duff MEP and many others to discuss the politics of Turkish accession.
 
This year’s conference  openned on the evening of 15th September with a dinner attended by Peter Mandelson, EU Commissioner for Trade and Ali Babacan, Minister of State and Chief Negotiator for the Republic of Turkey.  The main seminar on the 16th emphasised frank, off-the-record discussion of some of the most important, but also the most controversial aspects of EU-Turkey relations:
  • Stumbling blocks and opportunities in the accession process including: the state of negotiations; the role of business in accession; possible solutions for the Cyprus question
  • Public opinion and support for accession in Turkey and the European Union
